Plymouth Student: The Beginning

As part of my work based learning, I've decided to include the small business I set up over the summer. Myself and a group of friends, all from Graphic Design or Illustration at PCA, began our own student magazine.

The idea came to myself after realizing that many people coming from different cities to Plymouth for education may have no idea of where to start on the smaller things, like where's a good music venue, where's good to drink and other information. It felt like there was rather a large gap in the market in the city where this information wasn't readily available to students who needed it.

In recent years, I felt that 24/7 magazine wasn't providing that information to students like it might have used to. I wanted to create something that was very readable, not pretentious and something easily available for students to take.

My Dad has had a lot of experience in the publishing industry and advised me that the best way to go for this was to create a free newspaper that would rely solely on advertising for funding. By having a newspaper, it would mean that it would keep costs to a minimum, but also allow the publication to remain free to students. With my experience as a student myself, it was hard to say no to anything free when the budget's tight.

I set about gathering a team of people who were willing to contribute to the magazine, ranging from photographers, graphic designers, illustrators, web designers and also a friend of mine who was quite well known in the local music scene.

With help from my Dad and through a group discussion, the name was decided. Plymouth Student or PS as it has come to be known was conceived.
